Positively Port Townsend

Last time I visited Port Townsend?  Hmm...30 years ago?

Had the opportunity to spend a night there recently, and was
so delighted by this charming, arty, Victorian-influenced town.
Incorporated in 1851, Port Townsend has nearly 9,000 residents,
and sits on the northern tip of Washington's Olympic Peninsula.
It is a haven for wooden boat lovers, sailors, rowers,
and lovers of the outdoors.

If you arrive by ferry, this is your view upon exiting.

Chose to stay at the Palace Hotel
 (because it's a dog-friendly spot).

 And quite charming.

Water Street is lined with beautiful Victorian
buildings housing all manner of quirky shops
and eating spots.

Loved this display!

I found myself drawn to the many old, faded
painted advertisements on the brick buildings.

Sunday street fair.

 Biggest Rhody I've ever seen.

Big ol' rowing boats!

 Gorgeous hand-crafted wooden kayaks.

 Pretty safe place, I'd say.

The boys appreciated this town's doggy amenities.

Established in 1907 and still going strong.

Cool hang-out.
After a full day, it felt great to crack a beer beachside.

And even better to be at the gathering spot of a group of folk musicians.

She tried so hard not to get her pretty red silk dress wet.....

These people sailed up to shore for a slice
of pizza.

 Great meal at Asian Noodle.

This was a strange bar. Only one beer on tap,
and I walked out with three mason jars filled with
pineapple strawberry plants that a young man was
peddling (I'm a sucker for an earnest entrepreneur).

 "Yeah, I own this corner."

Take a road trip, and enjoy!

  1. Hello,

Where did you come from? You seem so at home in all these new and interesting places?! (This is me trying to be as cleaver with words as you: )

Seriously, I like these kinds of blogs. Some are strong in photography, other in words. You have a knack for both and it's a joy. Thank you for sharing your unique and beautiful view.

P.S. Your dogs are too cute!

  2. I'm awfully grateful that you appreciate the (admittedly sparse) blog entries :) I take a ridiculous amount of photos in any given day (often for reference for future paintings, and often just because something strikes me in a certain way).....you have inspired me to up my blog entry quantities - and now with the pressure to be clever!

Thanks for your great and thoughtful feedback.

p.s.I hope you're staying cool in that Calif heat....maybe in the surf or on a trail or in a quirky tavern with a cold IPA somewhere?!

  3. I can see how your pictures would be great material to paint from. I too create, and know what you mean about how certain things "strike (one) in a certain way". I have been in a period of searching for those kinds of things. It's a wonderful experience to simply notice what qualities make the heart sing. Inspiration is illusive, and so nice when it arrives: )

Yes, we're having the whole range of nice weather here. Heading to the coast today in search of flotsam, wind, and waves.

It's nice to see such beautiful weather up there too. You clearly (pun intended: ) are enjoying! Bravo.

Looking forward to more or your inspired explorations: )

P.S. Cleaver isn't quite the right word. Fun is better, and it seems to come naturally to you: )

  4. I love your choice of words here. You sound like a true artist, one who's experienced the frustration and joy of finding the "it" moment.

I hope you found such inspiration on your journey to the coast....perhaps you happened upon the legendary Rhubarb Rights, where I hear there's always a little magic in the sea air ; )

    Be well....
