I can't go too long without hitting up a flea market,
especially one that's in a cool spot.
Headed over the swanky new span of the Bay Bridge on Sunday
(almost missing the sneaky left-side exit to Treasure Island).
Been driving over (through?) Treasure Island for decades
to-ing and fro-ing between San Francisco and the east bay,
often saying "one of these days I'm going to check out that island."
It took a flea market to get me there.
I was a little confused to be greeted by a Naval Station....
...but followed the line of cars to a delightful set-up.
The flea market is situated in and around a wonderfully curved
deco-influenced (decommissioned) building,
spilling out to a winery in the back.
Stalls are filled with the usual
and unusual.
And a priceless cast of characters.
(Charlie Frank makes a mean coconut/rum sweet potato pie).
But the find of the day?

Traveling bar cart! Now we're talking.
Pets are welcome (even your hairless Sphynxes).

Not sure what this was, but it was huge and fried, topped with a fried egg
(nice of him to let me photograph it)
Settled on wood-fired pizza, beer, and a view for lunch.
Not a bad view from the restroom.
When you're tired of looking at tchotchkes you only
need to turn and look the other way.
Found a vintage metal sign for my kitchen,
with the help of a Bloody Mary.
Driving around the island, spotted these shady characters,
and "Bliss Dance"
who I immediately fell in love with
(I have such admiration for sculptors).
The Treasure Island Flea Market is open the last weekend of
every month. It's fun way to spend the day, easy to get to,
and all in all a special little spot.

This is wonderful. Thank you for your one-of-a-kind perspective on this interesting place and eclectic gathering. I enjoyed getting to see the murals, the architecture, the vistas, the sculpture, the sphynxes, the Doggie Diner Dogs, the artists, the food, the art, the comic books, all the other interesting items for sale, and the many clever ways it was displayed. I appreciate the knack you have with your camera, your fun captions, and the creative way you put it together. Thanks again for sharing your experiences. You have a way of making this world glow.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your more-than-kind words - so happy to know someone out there enjoyed the post ;) I get the feeling you would appreciate the uniqueness of the place....I highly recommend a trek out there. Make sure you drive around the rest of the island - it's a little sad the state much of it is in, but you can see so much potential with some of those abandoned buildings. As for making the world glow, now THAT'S a compliment I will hang on to and try to live up to! Big smile :-)
